Establishing Bedtime Bugs in 1998, Claudine and Carina started making pyjamas for a few friends at creche, and soon moved from kids to Mums and Dads. Over the past 13 years they have built a highly successful business with a very large client base of pyjama lovers who repeatedly purchase the wild and funky garments that Claudine and Carina can come up with over a glass of red wine, pair of scissors and a sewing machine.
Claudine McPherson
Claudine McPherson's first starting managing a lingerie boutique in Vancouver, Canada to pay her way through a University commerce degree. After being conned by her husband to move to Melbourne and then (conned again) some years later to Singapore, the lingerie bug bit her again.
Establishing "Not-so-strait-laced lingerie" allowed her to design beautiful silks, cottons and lace from around the world to her wealthy expatriate clients.
After 5 years, returning again to Melbourne, she found that without maids to do their daily washing, Australian women and silk lingerie didn't quite mix.
But in using the odd pieces of cotton flannelette to design some pyjamas for her two year old son, she found a new market.
Carina Westoby
Carina Westoby's love of retail merchandising and design skills first took off with the Melbourne College of Decoration, and then into more practice with the Sussan chain before spending many years working for the Coolabah Greeting card company.
These experiences mean that she has the sharpest eye for a store presentation and design and will go to no ends to make sure her customers "leave happier than when they first came into the store".
What makes this sleepwear so different?
Everything is hand made by Claudine and Carina right here in Melbourne. There is no sweatshop, no contract sewing, and no shortcuts.
Everything is made of 100% cotton all excellent quality, colour fast and hardwearing. Claudine and Carina use only the best quality threads, all buttons are sewn on by hand, and even the interfacing used to strengthen collars and lapels is serious quality from Germany.
All of this coupled with their perfectionist sewing and limited edition runs bring customers back each season.
After years of direct selling, country craft markets and wholesaling to children's boutiques, the first retail store was opened in 2006 in High Street Ashburton. It is a working artisan store where customers can actually see their garments being made. Customers can choose from the hundreds of garments already available or they can choose to have one custom made, for an addition cost, with their own measurements and fabric choices. There are hundreds of fabrics to choose from and with a little help from the girls, you can make the perfect selection for your own pyjamas with personality.
For those people who love their pyjamas and dare to be different, or want something out of the ordinary, they have found the right place to express themselves.
Welcome to Bedtime Bugs! The home of "pyjamas with personality".
